Middle School Apologetics Day:
Learning To Defend Our Faith
By Samantha DePriest
The week leading up to Easter was the perfect time to host our first Middle School Apologetics Day, a special time set aside for the spiritual development of our sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. The word apologetics comes from the Greek word “apología” which directly translates as 'speaking in defense'. It is described as “The religious discipline of defending doctrines through systematic argumentation and discourse.” Christian Apologetics is the defense of our faith of why Christianity is true. It helps grow confidence in our Faith and makes us more effective in sharing the Gospel.
There are different types of Christian Apologetics, these are just a few of the types covered during Middle School Apologetics Day.
Historical Apologetics - the case for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Archaeological Apologetics - the findings and discoveries to help us realize the Bible can be confirmed.
Biblical Apologetics - internal and manuscript evidence at the literature and sources.
Cultural Apologetics - how we take the bible and apply to the culture, how is Christianity defensible when facing hard issues in this day and age.
As you know, there are 1,189 chapters in the Bible broken down into 2 testaments with 66 books in all, 39 books in the old testament and 27 books in the new testament. The Bible was written over a course of about 1,500 years on 3 different continents in Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic. The first 2 chapters of the Bible is about Creation, chapter 3 is about the Fall, and the rest of Bible talks about our Redeemer and the restoration.
Christian Apologetics helps our students to understand the stories in Bible so they can defend their faith with facts that Christianity is both true and defensible. When they leave TCS to go out into the world one day, they will truly know why they are Christians and can help make Him known.
After much planning and preparation, topics chosen to discuss and help our students gain a better understanding were:
What is a worldview?
Is Jesus the only way to heaven?
How do we know the resurrection really happened?
What happens when Jesus comes back?
Did the Ice Age happen and how does that fit into the book of Genesis?
Can we know if God truly exists?
Middle School Principal Mr. Adam Vinson shared, “We had an awesome day last week equipping our students to defend their faith by talking about the “why” behind so many of our beliefs. Students were treated to speakers from around the nation on topics related to God’s existence, the resurrection of Jesus and the impact of the flood. Hopefully your child was able to relay some of the important truths they were exposed to as a result of the day. A big thank you to our TCS Annual Fund which helped us bring in some of these special speakers!”
In addition to big group sessions, our middle school Bible teachers held small group sessions in classrooms where students rotated with their Discipleship groups to discuss the following topics: Worldview, Beliefs, Resurrection, and the big questions like what happens to people who die and don’t hear about Jesus and what happens when Jesus comes back?
Tripp Almon: “Why Are You A Christian?”
Rob Conti: “Shrouded in Mystery”
Zach Mabry: “Ice, Ice Baby”
Spencer Davis: “Dinos, Dragons, and Demi-Gods Oh My!”
